"Originally the approach people took in Michigan was a cosmic approach. … What I love about [EAG's] approach is that instead of dealing with [reform] on a cosmic level, they're dealing with it on a very specific level—of real tangible stuff that has nothing to do with children, except freeing more assets to go to children."--Dick Morris, author, Fox News analyst, and former strategist for President Bill Clinton What We DoEAG gives Michigan citizens an organized voice in supporting their school board to make the tough decisions. For too long the largest school employees union in our state, the Michigan Education Association (MEA), and their local affiliates, have been the only recognizable voice in education debates. In fact, they are often cited in the media because of their "Critical List"--a list of districts working without a contract--allowing areas of concern to be viewed through the union's prism. The MEA union claims to look out "for the education of our students," but in reality their primary mission is to look out for their members. They have the staff and resources to strong-arm the school boards into doing only what the union wishes. EAG is ensuring that taxpayers, parents and education advocates have a voice, too. Another key component of our mission is to stand with those school board members who are willing to do the right thing when they vote for a health care plan other than those sold by the union-sponsored Michigan Education Special Services Association (MESSA), or vote to contract for non-instructional services. Too often, when the union does not get its way with the school board, the union launches recall efforts against union-offending board members. School board leaders need to know taxpayers are behind them and are not willing to tolerate union bully tactics. |
